On November 16, 2006, Bob Gorsky and the law firm of Lyon, Gorsky, Haring & Gilbert, L.L.P. sponsored a Police Association Leadership Program at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie. The program addressed common questions confronting TMPA members. Bob Gorsky spoke on critical incidents and internal investigations of complaints. Phil Burleson, Jr., discussed how to proactively address complaints of family violence when a divorce is looming in an officer’s future. Chris Livingston, emphasized the potential conflicts of interest facing an attorney hired to represent a government unit and its officer in a lawsuit -- and the need to have the attorney’s conduct monitored to control those conflicts. The Program also addressed the benefit of a will. These are just a few of the issues that keep popping up in departments across the state. Frank McLane, Todd McLane, and Jim Schulmire of the McLane Agency, Inc. made a presentation regarding retirement planning and investing. TMPA staff, including Mitch Landry, Noel Johnson, and Dick Brock, presented on political action committees and the best practices for local police associations. Representatives from several departments in the Metroplex attended the Program. Afterward, several officers stayed for live horse racing. A 2007 Leadership Program is in the works.
