rejects allegations

Nine Anglo Dallas police officers and a Hispanic officer have filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging that the Police Department has engaged in a pattern of race, gender and age discrimination with regard to transfers.

“ The practice is so incredibly blatant that it’s unreal,” said Rhonda Cates, an attorney for the officers who has asked that the cased be consolidated and signed to one investigator.

Janice Houston, a police spokesman, declined to comment on the individual complaints but said: “The department does not make decisions based solely on race, age or gender.”

Sgt .Thomas Glover, president of the predominately black Texas Peace Officers Association, said he was baffled by the complaints.

“ For years, there was no diversity in any of the divisions,” he said. “Now that qualified people of color are being selected, accusations are coming out of reverse discrimination. The white males are going to have to realize that just because a minority gets a job does not mean that they are not qualified.”

The complaints, filed Friday, do not involve officers’ rank or pay.

They take issue with transfers, which deal with duties on the job and work schedules.

The officers listed in the complaint are Sgt. Mark McClenny and Senior Cpls. Dennis Brummett, George King, Paul Jarvis, Joe Copeland, Jeffrey Burge, Frederick Frazier, Scott Sayers, Anthony Smith and Mark Woody.
