Highlight Recent Cases at Texas Police Law Seminar
Wednesday, February 28, 2007 - GRAPEVINE, TEXAS.
On February 28, 2007, Phil Burleson, Jr. presented a paper prepared by Chris Livingston at the 2007 Texas Police Law Seminar, which occurred at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas. The seminar attendees included police chiefs, police officers, other city officials, and lawyers from throughout Texas. The focus of the seminar this year was racial profiling. More information about the seminar can be found at www.texaspolicelaw.com.
Chris was invited to present the paper, but was unable to attend due to a hearing. Phil’s presentation was enthusiastically received. The paper analyzed recent cases and emphasized how to defend police officers when a racial-profiling allegation is made. The presentation focused on two recent cases from the U.S. Supreme Court, Wallace v. Kato, -- U.S. --, No. 05-1240 (2007) and Brigham City v. Stuart, 126 S. Ct. 1943 (2006). Additionally, the paper included analysis of decisions from other federal and state courts. These decisions are important in defending not only against racial profiling claims, but also against other claims of police misconduct.
